Why Progressing to Level 4 in Sports Massage Therapy Matters

Completing a Level 3 Sports Massage course is a fantastic achievement and a strong foundation for anyone entering the industry. It provides essential knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and hands-on techniques for working with clients to improve flexibility, relieve muscular tension, and support overall wellbeing.

However, what many new therapists don’t realise is that Level 3 alone does not qualify or insure you to assess or treat injuries. This is a critical distinction that can easily be misunderstood—and unfortunately, it’s something we see all too often.

At Level 3, your scope of practice is limited to general maintenance work and non-clinical massage. You’re not qualified to diagnose or provide treatment plans for musculoskeletal injuries or dysfunctions. That means while you can work with clients to support recovery after physical activity, you must not attempt to assess or treat injuries, as doing so not only falls outside your qualification—it may also invalidate your insurance.

This is where Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy becomes essential.

Progressing to Level 4 expands your knowledge, skillset, and professional responsibility. It equips you with a deeper understanding of injury mechanisms, assessment techniques, and more advanced treatment protocols. Most importantly, it ensures you are properly qualified and insured to work with clients who present with injuries—whether they’re recreational athletes, fitness enthusiasts, or everyday individuals dealing with common musculoskeletal complaints.

It’s a real shame that so many therapists stop at Level 3 and don’t take that next step. Whether it’s due to a lack of awareness, confidence, or the misconception that Level 3 is “enough,” the reality is that without Level 4, you are significantly limited in how you can support your clients.

At BTST Academy, we’re passionate about raising standards in the industry and helping therapists reach their full potential. Our Level 4 course not only develops your practical skills but builds your confidence to take on more complex cases safely and effectively.

If you’re a Level 3 Sports Massage Therapist, we strongly encourage you to invest in your future—and in your clients—by continuing your journey to Level 4. The industry needs more fully qualified, skilled professionals, and your progression could make all the difference.
